9th District Caucus, Sat Feb 12

By Tim Greimel, 9th District Democratic Party Chair
Thursday, February 10, 2011

As you know, this weekend is the Michigan Democratic Party's convention at Cobo Center in Detroit. As part of this weekend's festivities, the 9th District Party will convene from 1 pm until 2:30 pm on Saturday. I hope you'll join us!

We are scheduled to be in Room O3-45. That means that we're in the "Oakland" section, on the third floor, in room 45. You may want to confirm that on the day of the convention by looking at a schedule of events.

As I have communicated before, I was recently elected to serve as the chairperson of the Democratic caucus on the Oakland County Commission. As a result, I will not be running for re-election as chairperson of the 9th District Party. (Battling the majority Republicans on the county commission is a full-time job!)

It has been my privilege and pleasure to serve as chair of the 9th District Party and to assist with the re-election of our outstanding representative in Washington, Congressman Gary Peters!

At this Saturday's caucus meeting, we will elect a new chairperson of the 9th District Party, as well as other 9th District Party officers, state central committee delegates and alternates, and 9th District Party executive committee members. Please see the agenda below for details.

The 30 slots on the 9th District Party's executive committee are divided among the various Democratic club areas in the 9th District based on the relative number of votes that were cast for the Democratic candidate for Secretary of State (Jocelyn Benson) in last fall's election. The more such votes that were cast in a specific club area, the greater the number of seats that club area has on the 9th District Party's executive committee.

If you are interested in running for the executive committee, please look at that item on the agenda below to determine what club area you live in and how many executive committee seats your club area has been allocated this year.

Also, there will be something new on this year's agenda at the Michigan Democratic Party convention. Beginning at 2:30 pm on Saturday, immediately following congressional district caucuses, five issue panel discussions will take place concurrently.

The topics are: (1) Fostering an economic environment for investment and growth; (2) The role of government in growing the economy; (3) Reforming Michigan's budget and tax structure; (4) Building Michigan's communities, including retaining and attracting our talented young people; and (5) Building community support for change.

I am very excited about these policy-focused panel discussions! As always, please e-mail or call me with any questions. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday!
