Rep. Peters on President's visit to Michigan to highlight auto industry successes

From the Office of U.S. Rep. Gary Peters
Friday, July 30, 2010

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Gary Peters, whose district is home to Chrysler World Headquarters, two General Motors plants and more auto suppliers than any district in the country, issued the following statement today following President Obama’s visit to the Detroit-area to highlight recent success in the auto industry and the jobs it has created:

“What’s happening in the U.S. auto industry is incredibly exciting. Less than two years after the global financial crisis pushed it to the brink of collapse, sales and profits are up and jobs are being created. In fact, the industry is on track to create more jobs this year than any year since 1999. Taxpayers are being paid back for their investment.

“J.D. Power’s rankings show that American cars are higher quality than their foreign competitors. Had action not been taken, instead of celebrating successes and creating jobs, America’s auto industry would be gone. Acting to preserve our nation’s auto sector and the millions of jobs it supports was clearly the right thing to do.”
