Tax Help and Hints
With tax season upon us, here are some helpful hints to watch for when having your taxes prepared.
Your paid tax preparer should be available to assist you with Department of Treasury or IRS inquiries year-round.
Make sure a preparer has a professional license and credentials. Always get a copy of your completed tax return for your records.
Using e-file and direct deposit is the safest and fastest way to file and receive your tax return.
For information about individual and business taxes and free tax preparation and assistance, visit www.michigan.gov/taxes.
Home Heating Credits
The Michigan Public Service Commission reminds you that home heating credits for the 2009 tax year are now being processed. Home heating credits are designed to financially assist low-income families with heating their home in the winter.
Applications can be found at www.michigan.gov/heatingassistance and are due in September. For those that file tax returns, it is quickest to do so through e-file. Free e-file services and instructions are available at www.MIfastfile.org. A tax return is not necessary to apply for assistance.
State of the State Overview
Governor Granholm delivered the State of the State address on Feb. 3, outlining her economic plan for Michigan. One of the most important ways to turn Michigan around is by making state government more efficient and cost effective.
In her address, Gov. Granholm also spoke of the positive impact in Michigan from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. According to the Governor, at least 42,000 jobs have been created as a result of the act, and as much as $11 billion has gone to offset taxes and give tax credits to Michigan residents.
The Recovery Act has made funding available for the movie industry and the clean-energy sector here in Michigan. Over $82 million has been allocated to improve and invest in Michigan's renewable energy sources, upgrading energy efficiency in buildings around the state, and education in energy-reducing practices.
Snow Shoveling Volunteers Needed
Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA) is looking for volunteers to shovel snow for elderly residents.
Remember to always use caution while shoveling snow. Stay hydrated and do not over-exert yourself. Stop immediately if you feel pain or shortness of breath, and always watch out for slippery ice.
Please contact Kathy Phelan at (248) 209-2600 if you are interested in volunteering.
