Corporate Responsibility Act Passes House
Last week, I voted for the Corporate Responsibility Act — a package of bills that passed through the House to enhance accountability and transparency when state funds are used as economic development incentives by requiring background checks for those receiving the incentives.
The safeguards come after a convicted felon was awarded $9.1 million in tax incentives for his new company. The measure will prevent incentives from going to con artists, and instead will ensure they go to legitimate businesses dedicated to creating jobs in Michigan.
Join Me at My April Coffee Hours
Don't miss upcoming chances to chat with me at my April coffee hours. I will be in Ferndale on Monday, April 12, at AJ's Café at 240 W. Nine Mile Road from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. On Monday, April 26, I will be at the Coffee Beanery in Berkley at 28557 Woodward Ave. from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
For the remainder of the year, I will be holding the first coffee hour of the month in Ferndale and the second in Berkley. Please join me for a cup of coffee and to discuss any issues or concerns you may have.
Tax Filing Reminder
Remember to file your federal and state income taxes before Thursday, April 15. Many free and low-cost tax preparation services are available through local universities and various community volunteer organizations.
There are trained tax preparers on hand at the Ferndale Senior Center and the Berkley Community Center. Their services are available for free to residents with incomes below $50,000. Please feel free to contact my office if you are having trouble finding assistance with you tax return.
April is Alcohol Awareness Month
I want to remind you that April is Alcohol Awareness Month. This is an excellent opportunity for parents and students to discuss the negative effects of underage drinking.
Communication in a positive parent-teen relationship is important in preventing underage drinking. There are many legal consequences for underage alcohol use or possession as well as for parents who provide alcohol for minors.
Setting a good example of responsible behavior, providing boundaries, and recognizing and responding to warning signs are all important steps in preventing the negative effects of alcohol abuse.
Thank You!
I would like to personally thank everyone who attended my town hall meeting last week on Michigan's Tax Structure with State Senator Gilda Z. Jacobs. The discussion focused on the state budget process, the funding crisis, and potential solutions. We had more than 50 residents come out for the discussion and we appreciate your input and involvement.
