Welcome back to Michigan, Mr. President!

By U.S. Congresman Gary Peters

Today President Obama will lay out his blueprint to make college more affordable and accessible to all Americans at the University of Michigan.

To help welcome President Obama back to Michigan and drive this plan forward, this morning I published an op-ed in the Free Press that you can read online by clicking here.

With the cost of local schools increasing 111% over the last ten years, Michigan can't wait any longer. We need to work together to help President Obama cut the cost of higher education.

During the State of the Union on Tuesday, President Obama called on Congress to take action to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling in July, and yesterday I announced that I'll be taking a lead role to get this done in Congress.

Right now the unemployment rate for Americans that don't have a college degree is more than double the rate for those that do. Over a lifetime, college graduates can also expect to earn an income that's roughly twice what a non-college graduate will earn. I think everybody should have a fair chance to achieve the American Dream and I'm committed to working with the President to make this happen.

Thank you and I hope to see you at President Obama's speech at the University of Michigan today.
