More than 50 people gathered to protest the war in Afghanistan at the corner of 9 Mile and Woodward on the afternoon of Monday, June 27. As one of their signs read, "war weary public and skeptical Congress demand a more rapid draw down."
This sign reflected a widely felt sentiment that 9 1/2 years of war is already too much and a rejection of the slow pace of withdrawal and a distant 2014 timeline for an end to the war.
People have been protesting the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq every Monday afternoon for years now at 9 Mile and Woodward. Member groups of the Detroit Area Peace with Justice Network put out the call to gather there this first Monday after the President's Afghanistan withdrawal speech.
As a result, members of Peace Action of Michigan, the Huntington Woods Peace Citizenship and Education Project, etc. joined the stalwart protesters in their call for "Jobs not War", "Health Care not Warfare" and "Instead of War, Feed the Poor."

Working Families Rally in Lansing, Michigan, Wednesday, March 16, 2011
Photos and Story by Erik Karell
My mom and I arrived at the Capitol at noon. There were already several thousand people there gathered at the steps, carrying signs, and cheering loudly. Several people spoke including various union leaders, Gretchen Whitmer, the Democratic Senate Leader, and Richard Hammel, the Democratic House Leader.
At about 1 pm, the speeches were over and many people moved inside the Capitol to the rotunda. There, thousands cheered, chanted, and made their voices heard. Additionally, as many people as could fit, made their voices heard right in front of the doors to the House chamber. There's no doubt the Representatives inside heard our chanting.
At 2 pm, there were more speeches by union leaders, a small business owner from Traverse City, and Reverend Dr. Wendell Anthony, the president of the Detroit branch of the NAACP. In addition, the "Koch" brothers spoke and "spilled the beans" about their real intentions. It was well done and funny.
At 3 pm, people moved back inside to try and meet with their representatives. My mom and I decided to leave however, as we needed to return to Detroit.
Overall, the event was inspiring, encouraging, and hopeful. More and more people are waking up to the atrocities being undertaken by King Snyder and his fellow millionaires and billionaires. We all need to stay vigilant, be active, and never give up. If we unite, we cannot be defeated. As was cheered so many times at the rally, "THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!"
